From the sheer number of products to the countless online shops globally, consumers have more shopping choices today than ever. While consumers love these options, for retailers it creates a fiercely competitive environment, with each vying to stand out.

For one of the largest retailers in Korea, however, this competitive situation presented the opportunity to create a digital shopping destination. The retailer realized this would better serve not only its customers but also the many vendors that need a place to sell their products.

When the retailer approached SmartOSC, an Adobe Gold Solution Partner, to help create a digital marketplace, the agency knew Adobe Commerce would be the perfect platform.

Setting up for success

To ensure the best possible result, SmartOSC started from square one. Rather than building upon any existing systems, which might have been outdated or inefficient, the agency instead chose Adobe Commerce for its robust, extensible feature set.

Adobe Commerce had all the capabilities the marketplace project needed for success and would enable the Adobe partner to design the bespoke solution to deliver seamless customer and vendor experiences. From the vast number of integrations available via its large extension library — including critical systems such as SAP — to its support of multi-device shopping, Commerce offered all the capabilities the client required.

Attracting a variety of vendors

Key to any marketplace is offering a wide variety of products. For the retailer, this meant its marketplace platform needed to attract new vendors while streamlining the experience for existing vendors. The integrations available for Adobe Commerce combined with SmartOSC's expertise far exceeded the retailer’s expectations of how the platform could meet those needs. 

With the Marketplace Multi-Vendor Module extension for Adobe Commerce, vendors can now access personalized tools through a portal to improve their selling processes. They can self-serve content to the marketplace, including logos, images, and products, and also perform admin tasks, such as feedback and reporting.

In addition, vendors can automate part of their product management processes, including updating stock, offering promotions, and processing orders and refunds. Vendors can easily complete any of their processes manually when necessary. By integrating SAP ERP with the Commerce platform, SmartOSC was also able to provide the retailer with valuable views into business operations.

Creating an ideal customer experience

Once SmartOSC had successfully addressed the supply side of the marketplace, the partner moved on to tackling the customer experience side. Flexibility was crucial to the marketplace's success, so the agency enabled features that allowed customers the freedom of choice in a few key areas.

The Cybersource Payment Gateway provided consumer-friendly payment options, such as cash on delivery, while offering the security that the retailer needed. SmartOSC also enabled multiple logistics providers so customers could choose their preferred shipping method.

With these extensions, plus the comprehensive capabilities of Adobe Commerce, customers could shop from their device of choice, browse the many products available on the marketplace, purchase using the payment method they wanted, and ship purchases the way they needed.

Generating immediate success

With the Adobe Commerce platform and the expertise of SmartOSC, the retailer has realized its dream of launching a digital shopping destination. Customers are also enjoying an ideal shopping experience. In fact, within just six months of launch, the marketplace had 33,000 new registered shoppers, 700 vendors, and more than 100,000 products — all leading to a notable 13,000 transactions and the retailer being poised for exponential growth.
